MARS (liver dialysis)
Dr. Sevag Demirjian, director of critical care Nephrology at Cleveland Clinic, reviews the MARS system (molecular adsorbent recirculating system) which is used to support critically ill patients with liver failure. In short, MARS provides a process for the removal of protein bound toxins which traditional dialysis does not. The review includes a detailed prescription of the MARS setup, technical considerations, used filters and a review of the toxins involved.
